Legal and Professional Contributions

• Mr. Chartrand has lectured and presented materials to Manitoba Bar Association, the Indigenous Bar Association, the National Judicial Institute and the Manitoba Provincial Court bench on a variety of criminal law and Aboriginal rights topics including Aboriginal Offender sentencing and the use of Gladue reports. He has authored various legal articles and has been published in Law Journals.
• Mr. Chartrand coached an Aboriginal Law student Moot Court team at the University of Manitoba who won a national moot court competition.
  In 2006, Mr. Chartrand organized and presented an Urban Aboriginal Justice conference to engage the Aboriginal community and legal profession on Aboriginal Offenders, to assist in creating materials for use in Aboriginal offender (Gladue) reports.
• In Alberta, Mr. Chartrand participated as a member of the Alberta Justice Aboriginal Sexual Assault Committee which examined potential community alternative diversion programs.
• Currently, Lionel Chartrand is the Chair of the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association’s Committee to Reduce Indigenous Incarceration.
